How long does it take to heal Stress fracture?

Question:It's been 4.5 weeks off of my leg. I have taken the last two weeks completely off. My shin is pretty much pain free to the touch, but it will probably take another two-three days. I may be running again this week!

Answer:It varies a great amount. Ave. is about 6, but it can be as little as 4, and it took me (an old dog of 45) a good 8 weeks.

Did you get an x-ray? What kind of trauma was it? "Stress fracture" comprises a continuum from soft tissue damage to an outright fracture.

One bit of advice from experience: cross-train as much as you can (getting stoned may help in this regard). After the fracture has healed you will still have some residual pain that, unlike the fracture pain, must be trained through (but sensibly). The residual pain is caused by muscle soreness and periosteal inflammation, and the longer you wait, the longer it will take to eventually adapt to your old regimen. I would hope your doctor would give you advice on this front.
