Question:I've had a very small fracture in one of my carpal bones that has sidelined
my training for the last 10 weeks. I didn't have to wear a cast because the
bone was already starting to heal properly by the time I had it x-rayed. I
was told I could resume my training after 3 more weeks of rest in a splint.
I'm inclined to believe it was some sort of a stress fracture.
I'd like to know if there are any important things to consider when
returning to lifting after such a long layoff. I used to train 4 days/week;
should I immediately try to jump back into a 4 day/week routine? Should I
avoid forearm/wrist exercises for awhile longer? Just avoid anything that
causes any pain? Anyone else experienced a similar injury?
Answer:I've suffered a broken bone or two, but not a carpal bone
(that I know of!). Do what the doc says first and foremost, but
after a complete layoff of that duration, I'd go back acting
like it was all new to me. You can go back with a 4 day/wk
routine, but start with light weights and possibly fewer sets
than you were doing when you left off. Add weight on a schedule
that has you wanting to do more for about a month, then see
where you are. There shouldn't be any pain from the fracture,
but if there is I'd stop immediately and consult the doctor.
