Does anybody know about my foot syndrome?

Question:This problem only occurs after about 50 miles of constant riding. It seems to be aggravated mostly by long flat rides. My middle toes and the connecting bones in the foot feel like they're on fire. Moving the toes around for circulation makes it worse. Keeping the toes still in the shoe is best. The problem continues even with new shoes from a different maker. The pain can be intense.

Anybody know anything helpful about this?

Answer:I had a similar problem with my left foot. A shot of cortisone seems to have fixed it for the time being, but is a temporary fix. My podiatrist says I probably need to get orthotics. The orthotics stabilize your foot and thus prevent a lot of foot movement. She thinks it is a nerve condition caused by my high arches in combination with a small bone spur on top of my foot. When you flex your foot there is a lot of movement of your muscles, bones, tendons and nerves. The high arch makes it worse since the nerves on top of the foot move over an arched surface and are susceptible to damage even by your shoe. She says keep the shoe loose and make sure it is large enough. (I just bought Carnac shoes which are wide and they also made an improvement). You might try Dr Scholl's FLEXO foam arch inserts. She says the problem can also be caused by nerves on the bottom of your foot being pinched by bones. The flexo foam inserts have a second foam cushion which presses up against the foot behind the ball of your foot and this helps spread your toes to help prevent nerve pinch.
